A Unique Shop in the Old Carmel Tradition ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUES Chimney Pieces • Leaded Glass • Pedestal Sinks • Footed Tubs Period Lighting and Hardware • Marble, Stone & Wood Artifacts From Buildings of Another Time Friends Are Where You Find Them |
One of the best things about strolling along the streets of Carmel is discovering a shop that just isn't found anywhere else. One that speaks of a time when the pace was slower, bowlers were in style and courting was done on a bicycle or horse drawn carriage. A craftsman's hand shown in everything that was built, the warmth of a fire drew the family together and indoor plumbing was the hottest thing on the planet.
Off the Wall, a haven for rescued artifacts from times now only remembered, is just such a place. It's stuffed to the rafters with period chandeliers, columns, carvings, Victorian millwork, porch posts, railings, doors, door knobs, doorbells and hardware, fireplace mantels and inserts, overmantels, mirrors, leaded and stained glass, old style tubs, sinks, and fixtures, stoves, statuary, a stairway or two, and a delightful shopkeeper & her Pekingese peering out from it all who find great joy in finding an old house part a new place to live. If old things speak to you in that special way, as only heritage can, this is the place for you. The objects are unique and so are their stories. Like the skin horse in the "Velveteen Rabbit", they may have a frayed edge or their fur may be loved off, but they are as real as the history that made them. The shop, its stuff and its stuffer are in one of the older houses of Carmel on Lincoln Street, just north of the Pine Inn, between Fifth and Sixth. Stop in, make a new friend - and maybe take one home. |
